How Was The Painted Desert Formed?
The Painted Desert is actually a section of the greater Colorado Plateau that spans across Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. This area was formed millions of years ago when an ancient sea covered much of what we now call the American Southwest. As time passed and the area dried up, fine grained layers of sedimentary rock were exposed to weathering and erosion, creating the stunning formations we see today. These layers consist mostly of claystone, siltstone, limestone and shale that have been painted by iron oxide to create an array of brilliant blues, purples, reds, tans and pinks.
What Can You See There?
In addition to its famous colorful formations, there are several other sights to take in at The Painted Desert. Petrified Forest National Park is located within this desert landscape and features many fossils dating back over 200 million years ago! This park also contains some of the most breathtaking views you will ever experience with its richly colored badlands that stretch for miles beneath blue Arizona skies. Painted Desert Visitor’s Center
The Painted Desert Visitor’s Center was completed in 1962 as part of the Mission 66 Program which was a National Park Service initiative to vitalize and modernize the park system by 1966. The Visitor Center includes an information desk, bookstore, theater, and a computer center for interactive interpretation of the park. You can watch a movie about the park as well as talk to a park ranger. There is also a restaurant, bookstore, and a gift shop.
